Obituary for Thomas Gene Wright
Thomas Gene Wright, son of the late James and Leona Craft Wright was born July 14, 1932 in Mayking, Kentucky. He entered eternal life Monday, August 16, 2021 being 89 Years of age at the time of passing.
Tom married Debbie Looney on February 14, 2014 in Hemphill, Kentucky. He enjoyed music, dancing, family card games and socializing with his friends and veteran buddies. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was an Army Master Sergeant in the Korean War. He joined the Kentucky State Police as a Trooper in 1957 and retired as a Detective. As a trooper for the Kentucky State Police, he acted as a bodyguard for John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Lyndon and “Lady Bird” Johnson on their visits to Eastern Kentucky. He later worked for Beth-Elkorn Company as Head of Security at their Eastern Kentucky operations. He served as a Board Member of the Letcher County Kentucky Farm Bureau for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie Looney Wright; his daughter, Darlene “Tracy” Wright Snyder of Mason, OH; Jeff (Rocky ) “Thelma” Wright of Hyden, KY, step-daughter April “Marquis”Wright of Pikeville, KY, step-son Justin Wright of McRoberts, KY and step-daughter Brande “Randall” Scott of Pikeville, KY. One brother John Wright of Jenkins, KY and three sisters Polly Bittrich of Nicholasville, KY, Glenna Theresa Matney of Brandenburg, KY and Sheila Wright of North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Also surviving are his grandchildren Charity, Lauren, Crystal, Justin and Trenton; step grandchildren April, Justin and Brande; great grandchildren Annabelle, Sunny, Redford, Mason; step great grandchildren Alanna, Austen, Amauri, Amani, Makeilah, Maleik, Mackiah, Austin and Landon.
He is preceded in death by his late wife of 59 years Norma Jean Campbell, his son Thomas Gene Wright, Jr., his daughter-in-law Vickie Easterwood Wright, his brother Jesse Wright, and three sisters Jimmie Kay Adkins, Margaret Adams and Jane Bright.
