Rachel Moore Wright, who taught second grade in Letcher County Schools for 32 years, often had former students reach out and say she was their favorite teacher. She loved working with children.
Mrs. Wright, 93, died July 10, 2024 in Lexington, where she moved after living in Whitesburg for most of her life.
She is survived by daughter, Melody (Moore) Spradlin and son-in-law Bob Spradlin of Lexington; and step-grandchildren Olivia and Lee Spradlin;
brothers Ronnie Back (Patricia) Sellersburg, Indiana and Chad Back, Whitesburg, Ky; niece Theresa Moore Back and nephew Brian Moore, Lexington.
She was born Feb 28, 1931 to the late Ivol and Lochiel Pendleton Back.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by Edwin Lee Moore of Whitesburg who she married July 24, 1954, and who died in 1975 and Roy Wright of Jenkins who she married June 8, 1985 and who died in 2005;
three brothers: John Musick Back of Pulaski, Virginia; Tommy D. Back of Charlestown, Indiana; and Phillip A. Back of Whitesburg, KY and one sister Kathryn Peters, Whitesburg.
Mrs. Wright was a graduate of Pikeville College, a member of Whitesburg United Methodist Church, and enjoyed being a member of the
Whitesburg Women’s Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and Delta Kappa Gamma (teachers honorary society), and Andover Methodist Church, Lexington,
where she started the first ladies church circle which was named Rachel’s Circle in her honor.
In her earlier years, she contributed to The Mountain Eagle, writing The Whitesburg News.
She was a current subscriber and still loved reading it as soon as it arrived.
