Obituary for Lenora Watts

Lenora (Martin) Watts was born to Elizabeth (Profitt) and John David Martin on February 22, 1935. She grew up on Indian Creek in Democrat, Kentucky, and spent her adult life on Indian Creek before moving to Corbin, Kentucky, in 2022 to be closer to her family.

She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Indian Creek and the Fleming-Neon High School. She then started her college education at Lees College before transferring to Eastern Kentucky University, where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education.

She taught from 1958 to 1993 first at Hemp Hill Grade School then Colson Elementary School (which later became Beckham Bates Elementary School), where she sponsored the cheerleading team and introduced folk dancing into their routines.

She enjoyed The Lawrence Welk Show, country music, anything by Doris Day, and buying a new flashy automobile ever year. She also enjoyed reading The Mountain Eagle, and watching CNN every evening.

Lenora was a lifelong attendee of the Old Regular Baptist Church, Indian Bottom Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Louie Martin (2022), and her husband Elmine Watts. Although she had no children of her own, she adored her niece, nephews, and grandnephews.

She is survived by her sister Ritter (Martin) Cook (London, KY), her niece Lysbeth Martin (Knoxville, TN), and her nephews David Martin (Corbin, KY), and Rick Cook (Cincinnati, OH), as well as her grand-nephews John Martin (Knoxville, TN), Nathanael Martin (Knoxville, TN), Seth Martin (Corbin, KY).
