Obituary for Imogene Jean Adkins
Imogene Jean Adkins, "Nana" February 9, 1937- August 14, 2022 Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Loved by all who knew her. She was the sun that warmed our world. One of nine children born to the Burnie and Russell Howard, she was the widow of Ray Adkins, who died in 1990. She is survived by two sons, Bill Adkins (Betty) of Dry Ridge, Ky; and Jim Adkins (Ida) of Sergent, Ky, eleven grandchildren; Sarah Adkins, Garrett Oliver, Ashley Adkins, Kaitlin Adkins, Klaire Adkins, Alyssa Adkins, Gabrielle Adkins, Lauren Adkins, Darcy Adkins, Emma Adkins, Cassie Adkins, and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, James Howard, Greeneville, TN; Cecil Howard, Jenkins, Ky; Thomas Howard, Lexington, Ky; Allen Howard, Lexington, Ky, and sister, Sharon Hasty, Lexington, Ky. Two brothers, Walter Howard and Roger Howard, and one sister, Wanda Kincer, preceded her in death.

Jean Adkins was the daughter of a coal miner, raised in coal camps including Marlowe and all the experiences that went with it. She attended Stuart Robinson School and Whitesburg High School. She became a young mother one month shy of her nineteenth birthday. She loved her sons with everything in her and her sons loved her with everything in them. She was beautiful all of her life, she was always young in our eyes, and it was as if she'd never leave. She hasn't. She'll always be with us, her sons, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren. No stronger presence in our lives than Jean Adkins.

Hers is a life to be celebrated. She lived her life to the fullest and was a bright, shining light and brought joy to all who met her and knew her. Her kindness, her glow, her beauty, her soul enriched all of us.

A special expression of gratitude to Kaitlin Adkins, Lisa Howard and Klaire Adkins for their compassionate care for Jean Adkins during her final illness.
