Obituary for Gladys Mae Yonts
GLADYS MAE MULLINS YONTS
March 23, 1923 – May 6, 2018
Gladys Mae Mullins Yonts was born March 23, 1922, in the coal town of McRoberts, Kentucky. She died on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the age of 96, surrounded by her loving family.
Gladys was the only daughter of the late George “Pap” Mullins and Nancy “Nannie” Wright Mullins. She had five brothers and four sisters-in-law who preceded her in death, Virgil (Elma), Estill (Ida), Lloyd (Nina), Hassel Ray, and Bennett (Geraldine) Mullins.
Gladys and her beloved husband, Jim Yonts, were married on September 18, 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. Jim died in 1962 at the young age of 40.
After her graduation from Jenkins High School, she was employed by Consolidation Coal Company in the company store in McRoberts until her marriage. After the death of her husband, she began working as a nursing assistant at Jenkins Hospital and later at MCHC clinic in McRoberts. She especially loved her patients and her coworkers.
Before moving to South Carolina, she attended the McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in church with her musically talented family and friends. She also enjoyed helping with various church functions.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Yonts Tucker, and son-in-law, Dickie Tucker; her grandchildren, who referred to her as Gran, Shelly Tucker DeSimone and husband Jamie; Derek Tucker and wife Whitney; great grandchildren, who lovingly named her Gaga, Luke and Maria DeSimone and Clark and Gretchen Tucker; in-laws, Russell Yonts (Minerva), Duane Yonts (Ann), Marie Mercer, and Ella Sparks (Major).
No matter what nickname we called her, she was loved by all who knew her. She treated everyone with kindness and love, and was an amazing woman who inspired us all.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to McRoberts Old Regular Baptist Church, PO Box 151, McRoberts, KY 41835.
