Obituary for Ervin Whitaker, Jr
Ervin Whitaker Jr., was born May 21, 1923 in Jenkins, Kentucky and passed from this life on August 10, 2014 at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Cora Whitaker. His son, Vernard Whitaker. A daughter, Darlene Elswick. Two brothers; Richard "Buddy" Whitaker and Sherman Whitaker. He is survived by his daughter, Robin (Roy) Billiter of Shelbiana, Kentucky. A sister, Louise Whitaker of St. Petersburg, Florida. Also surviving are his son-in-law, Roger Elswick. A daughter-in-law, Laura Whitaker. Six grandchildren; Deanna (Jarrad) Hipps, Savanna Whitaker, Jennifer (Mark) Williams, Sara Ann Elswick, Ricorda (Brandon) Bornette, Jonathan (Nikki) Billiter. Seven great great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his nieces, nephews and cousins. He was extremely close to, loved and cared for by his granddaughters and daughter in law, Laura, Deanna and Savanna. Ervin was a member of the Eolia Baptist Church. He also belonged to the Jenkins Masonic Lodge, Lodge #856. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war he became the sole proprietor of the Whitaker Music Store in East Jenkins, Kentucky for many years. His music store was a gathering place of musicians including Ralph Stanley and other well known artists. He loved music with Religious and Bluegrass being his favorites.
