Carrie Bates, daughter of Haz and Maggie Calhoun Bates was born July 29, 1917 at Millstone, Kentucky. She entered eternal life January 10, 2019 at the Greg Noreen Wells Hospice Center in Hazard, Kentucky being 101 years of age at the time of her passing.
Carrie grew up along with her four sisters and four brothers on the family farm in Thornton, Kentucky. There she developed a life long love of gardening. She especially enjoyed growing flowers of all varieties.
One of Carrie's first jobs was delivering mail by horseback up Thornton Creek. She was an intrepid U.S. mail carrier for twelve years. Later Carrie worked at the Whitesburg Greyhound bus station until the station closed.
In the 1950's Carrie moved to Whitesburg. For thirty five years she served as a master seamtress and all around worker at the Pigman Brothers Dry Cleaners in Whitesburg, Kentucky.
Carrie raised her niece, Carrie Elizabeth Ann. Elizabeth "Betty Ann" and her son Jeremie Michael were a significant and special part of Carrie's life.
In addition to being a great gardener and cook, Carrie was an expert quilter and avid UK Wildcats fan. Carrie is a member of the Mayking Old Regular Baptist Church in Mayking, Kentucky.
Carrie is survived by her sister, Della Mae Marcum. Special nieces: Teddy Rhea Marcum, Pearlie Bates, Linda Rose Shelton, Shirley Hall; Special nephew, Freddie Adams, and a host of relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by four brothers, Martin Bates, Roberts Bates, John D. Bates and Jessie Bates. Three sisters; Lizzie Lucas, Hattie Mason and Nancy Cook.
